Ben Winkelman Trio

  • Wollongong Conservatorium of Music Murphys Avenue Keiraville, NSW, 2500 Australia (map)

Ben Winkelman - piano; Sam Anning - bass; Ben Vanderwal - drums

"The intellectual meets the intuitive by design throughout the entirety of Balance as Winkelman’s trio of equals, perpetually seeking a state of equilibrium, approach joyful swing, hard-hitting rock and chamber-like inventions as one big, interconnected thing of beauty." - Downbeat (USA)

"Together, these three tackle thorny thoughts, essay beauty with singular style, and swing hard right down the line... Bouncing between different moods and themes in short order, this trio never misses a beat." - All About Jazz (USA)

Pianist and composer Ben Winkelman has been living in New York City since 2010. Originally from Melbourne, He is regarded as one of the premier jazz pianists Australia has produced. Winkelman has released five critically acclaimed trio albums: his second, The Spanish Tinge, won the AIR Award for Best Independent Jazz Release and his first was nominated for an Australian Jazz Bell Award. The Australian National Jazz Award finalist has crafted his own unique style drawing on diverse musical interests filtered through a jazz perspective: Afro-Cuban, gospel and classical music, with a focus on Latin rhythms in odd meters. This performance will be part of an extensive tour of Australia and New Zealand to celebrate the release of his fifth album Balance featuring fellow award winning musicians Sam Anning on bass and Ben Vanderwal on drums.
