Scott Taggart: String Coordinator

Scott studied at the Sydney Conservatorium with Christopher Kimber, the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts with Alice Waten and undertook post-graduate studies on a full scholarship with David Takeno at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He worked in London with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The Philharmonia Orchestra, English Classical Players, and the City of London Sinfonia. Returning to Australia in 2001, he worked with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and toured with visiting International Artists. He also took the opportunity to increase and further his chamber music career.

He has appeared as a soloist and concertmaster with the string ensemble “Steel City Strings”, as well as in concerto appearances with the Sydney Sinfonietta. His recital series’ with pianist Marilyn Meier and performances in the “Taggart Trio” alongside David Pereira (cello) and Phillip Shovk (piano) have been received with great critical acclaim. He is a founding member of the ensemble “Kammer”, comprising of string and woodwind performers which is resident ensemble at Wollongong University. He has toured with this ensemble for Musica Viva, and performed at Chamber Music Festivals across the country. Recordings and Live broadcasts for the ABC have also been a part of his work over the last few years, most recently on the Classic 100 Chamber Music Compilation. Scott has built a reputation as an outstanding teacher through the Wollongong Conservatorium, the Australian Institute of Music and through his own private teaching studio.

 
Kathryn Crossing - violin

Kathryn has a Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in music education from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. She is a former member of the SBS youth orchestra and has played with and tutored many community and youth orchestras in and around Sydney.

She was appointed a tutor at the 2005 Pan-Pacific Music Camp and has taught at Stella Maris College, St Pauls Catholic College and The Illawarra Grammar School.

 
Niki Donald - violin

 

 

Niki began her musical life learning piano at the age of 5 and soon moved on to the violin, and has studied and performed classical music extensively. Niki studied music initially at The University of Sydney and more recently attained her Masters of Music in Performance from the prestigious Royal Northern College of Music in the U.K. There she also worked as a freelance musician performing with orchestras such as The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and was also a violin tutor at Manchester High School for Girls.

 

Since her return to Australia from the UK Niki has focussed her attention and passion on many different types of music, ranging from string quartets, to country, flamenco, and popular music. Niki also performs with several groups in and around the Illawarra region including her own group High Fidelity.

 
Juliette Levy - violin

Juliette Levy has a Diploma in Music from Adelaide University and also studied in Paris, London and Sydney. She has performed with the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in London and with the Kirov Ballet. Juliette has worked with artists as diverse as Frank Sinatra, Glen Campbell and Kamahl as well as performing as a member of the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra and the ABC Showband.

Juliette has taught at the Conservatorium for over 15 years and is an examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board and a member of the Australian String Teachers Association.

 
Nicole Saintilan - viola

Nicole works as a violist and teacher. She has played in groups such as Steel City Strings, Musica Troppo and Score Ensemble. She is currently a member of The Gleniffer String Quartet. Nicole spent five years teaching in London, during which time she studied Caribbean steel pan drumming and performed with the group Dexter’s Drummers.

Nicole is a very keen advocate of Australian Music. She has co-written a book on Australian music, written Honours and Masters theses on Australian Music History, published articles and collated the Historical Anthology of Australian Music for the University of Wollongong. She has given the world premier of a number of viola compositions including Andrew Schultz’s ‘Attack’ (AMEB Associate) and Andrew Ford’s ‘Swansong’ (AMEB Licentiate)

 
John Benz - cello

John Benz was born in London but received his musical education in Australia and Germany. After completing his Honours Degree with Kurt Hess at the University of Adelaide and chamber music studies with the Australian String Quartet in Adelaide, he continued his studies in Europe, receiving a German Music Performance Diploma at the Freiburg Staatliche Musikhochschule. He also participated in music courses in Europe for Cello and Chamber music with world renowned artists such as Anner Bylsma, Janos Starker, Rainer Kussmaul and the Cleveland String Quartet.

In Australia he was a member of the Adelaide Chamber Orchestra and was a founding member of the Adelaide Cello Ensemble. He has recorded several CDs in Australia, and more recently in Stuttgart with the Odeon String Quartet. Concert Tours have lead him through Europe, Russia, Korea and the USA. He previously held teaching positions at music schools in South Germany. Until his recent move back to Australia he played with the Dijon Opera Orchestra in France. Since 2002 he has been artistic director of the Flavigny Music festival in Burgundy. John joined the staff at the Conservatorium in 2009.

 
Ching-Wen Hsu - cello

Ching-Wen joined the Conservatorium staff in early 2008 and holds a Bachelor of Medical Science degree. A former student of the Wollongong Conservatorium and principal cello of the BlueScope Steel Youth Orchestra she has won many scholarships and prizes at local Eisteddfods for her playing.

Ching-Wen also teaches at The Illawarra Grammar School and is studying for a graduate diploma in education. She also has a brown belt in Karate!

 
Tanya Phillips - cello

Tanya Phillips studied at the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music and after gaining a Bachelor of Education degree joined the staff in 1986. She has also gained a Masters degree in Education from the University of Wollongong.

A former Board Member of the Conservatorium, Tanya is also the manager and lower string tutor for the BlueScope Steel Youth Orchestra, overseeing numerous tours, both within Australia and overseas. She regularly performs with the Gleniffer String Quartet and has taught extensively at schools throughout the Illawarra region

 
Mike Majkowski - double bass

Mike Majkowski has a Bachelor of Music (Jazz Studies) from the Sydney Conservatorium and has also studied classical double bass with Alex Henery (principal bass with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra). He is one of the new breed of creative musicians currently emerging on the Australia jazz scene.

Mike Majkowski

Mike is a gifted jazz bassist with an active interest in a wide spectrum of contemporary music. He is a founding member of the splinter orchestra (recently seen on ABC TV’s new music program SET) and is much in demand by his peers and is first choice bassist for a number of leading Sydney groups.

 
Michelle Spence - harp
 Michelle Spence is an experienced harpist, teacher and harp-maker. She has been teaching at the Wollongong Conservatorium for five years.
