Scott Taggart - String Coordinator |

Scott studied at the Sydney Conservatorium with Christopher Kimber, the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts with Alice Waten and undertook post-graduate studies on a full scholarship with David Takeno at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He worked in London with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The Philharmonia Orchestra, English Classical Players, and the City of London Sinfonia. Returning to Australia in 2001, he worked with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and toured with visiting International Artists. He also took the opportunity to increase and further his chamber music career.
He has appeared as a soloist and concertmaster with the string ensemble “Steel City Strings”, as well as in concerto appearances with the Sydney Sinfonietta. His recital series’ with pianist Marilyn Meier and performances in the “Taggart Trio” alongside David Pereira (cello) and Phillip Shovk (piano) have been received with great critical acclaim. He is a founding member of the ensemble “Kammer”, comprising of string and woodwind performers which is resident ensemble at Wollongong University. He has toured with this ensemble for Musica Viva, and performed at Chamber Music Festivals across the country. Recordings and Live broadcasts for the ABC have also been a part of his work over the last few years, most recently on the Classic 100 Chamber Music Compilation. Scott has built a reputation as an outstanding teacher through the Wollongong Conservatorium, the Australian Institute of Music and through his own private teaching studio.p> |

Kathryn Crossing - Violin |
Kathryn Crossing is a young, positive and enthusiastic teacher.
She has a Bachelor of Music majoring in music education from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. During her degree, Kathryn studied with one of Australia's leading violin teachers, Alex Todicescu.
Kathryn is an experienced performer, touring Italy and Russia with the SBS Youth Orchestra and Indonesia and Europe as a tutor with Bluescope Steel Youth Orchestra. She led the Mosman Orchestra for a number of years, and was a soloist on many occasions. She also has her AmusA and Associate in Performance from Trinity College, London.
She has been a violin teacher at Wollongong Conservatorium of Music for three years. She conducts the Junior Orchestra and tutors the Concert and Bluescope Steel Youth Orchestras.
Currently, Kathryn is touring with a classical-pop electric string group called Maske, which has given her the opportunity to travel and play exciting new repertoire. |

Kyle Little is a Canadian born violinist currently pursuing his Masters in Music Education at the University of Wollongong. Last year Kyle obtained a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education (music) from the same tertiary institution. In previous years he was a teacher at the American International School of Kuwait (AIS) where he taught instrumental music at the high school level.
Kyle completed his Bachelor of Music in violin performance from the University of Dalhousie, Nova Scotia and completed a Teacher’s Certificate from the Royal Conservatory of Music (Canada). As a performer, he has performed in Australia, Canada, Kuwait, Jordan, the US, and Cuba in both live concerts and recordings. He has been a member of a number of music ensembles including first violin in the Wollongong Symphony Orchestra, concert master of the Wollongong Community Orchestra, concertmaster of the Dalhousie University Orchestra, member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, and a member of the national award winning Quantum String Quartet.P>
Receiving a number of awards for academic and musical achievement, Kyle Little has been awarded the Canadian Millennium Scholarship (2006), Kiwanis Canadian National Grand Prize (2002), the Royal St. George’s Society Prize (2004) and the Bornoff/Garamie String Scholarship. Kyle joined the staff at the Wollongong Conservatorium in 2010. P> |
Rachel Thompson obtained a Bachelor of Music degree from Canterbury University, New Zealand a Diploma of Music from the New Music School, Philadelphia, USA and a Diploma of Teaching.
As a performer she has played with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Australian Opera and Ballet, Malaysian Symphony Orchestra and as Principal Viola with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.
She is an experienced teacher having worked at Canterbury University and in various schools in Christchurch, NZ. She moved to Sydney in 2009 and joined the staff of the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music in 2011. |

John Benz was born in London but received his musical education in Australia and Germany. After completing his Honours Degree with Kurt Hess at the University of Adelaide and chamber music studies with the Australian String Quartet in Adelaide, he continued his studies in Europe, receiving a German Music Performance Diploma at the Freiburg Staatliche Musikhochschule. He also participated in music courses in Europe for Cello and Chamber music with world renowned artists such as Anner Bylsma, Janos Starker, Rainer Kussmaul and the Cleveland String Quartet.
In Australia he was a member of the Adelaide Chamber Orchestra and was a founding member of the Adelaide Cello Ensemble. He has recorded several CDs in Australia, and more recently in Stuttgart with the Odeon String Quartet. Concert Tours have lead him through Europe, Russia, Korea and the USA. He previously held teaching positions at music schools in South Germany. Until his recent move back to Australia he played with the Dijon Opera Orchestra in France. Since 2002 he has been artistic director of the Flavigny Music festival in Burgundy. John joined the staff at the Conservatorium in 2009. |

Ching-Wen joined the Conservatorium staff in early 2008 and holds a Bachelor of Medical Science (Hon-Class I) degree and a Diploma of Education (Science and Music). A former student of the Wollongong Conservatorium and principal cellist of the BlueScope Steel Youth Orchestra, she has won many scholarships and prizes at local Eisteddfods for her playing. Ching-Wen regularly performs with her trio and quartet for weddings and functions, and has taught extensively at the University of Wollongong and at schools throughout the Illawarra region.

Tanya Phillips studied at the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music and after gaining a Bachelor of Education degree joined the staff in 1986. She has also gained a Masters degree in Education from the University of Wollongong. A former Board Member of the Conservatorium, Tanya is also the manager and lower string tutor for the BlueScope Steel Youth Orchestra, overseeing numerous tours, both within Australia and overseas. She regularly performs with the Gleniffer String Quartet and has taught extensively at schools throughout the Illawarra region |

Abel Cross (BSC w/ Distinction 2002, BMus 2007) received his first musical education at the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music and is most pleased to return as a bass and Jazz combo tutor.
Over the past decade Abel has performed, recorded, and collaborated with a long list of contemporary music luminaries from Australia and abroad including; Peter Brotzmann, Han Bennink, Don Rader, John Hoffman, Bernie McGann, Chris Abrahams, Scott Tinkler, Holly Throsby, and many more.
He is a founding member of original music groups; 3ofmillions, the Abel Cross NeoBop Quintet, Trio Apoplectic, and Pure Evil Trio, and in recent times has also taken an interest in new media music development and performance collaborating on projects such as the SMS-Interactive Orchestra and the Heavy Metal Work Orchestra.
Abel has experience in touring nationally and internationally, and has performed at all of Australia’s leading Jazz festivals including; the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Bellingen Jazz Festival, Bellingen Global Carnival, the Jazz:Now Festival, the nowNow Festival, and the Valley Jazz Festival.
He has studied with some of the world’s foremost bassists including; Henry Grimes, Rufus Reid, Drew Gress, Mark Helias, Craig Scott, Dave Ellis, and Alex Henery, and looks forward to passing on what he has learned to new generations of performers. |
