Alex Masso holds a Bachelor of Music (Jazz Performance) from the Sydney Conservatorium.
He is one of Sydney's emerging jazz & improvising drummers, and is becoming increasingly involved in contemporary music in Australia. His work with Trio Apoplectic has contributed to an interest in touring and collaborative projects. Along with other Sydney based groups such as The Splinter Orchestra, The Vampires and a duo with Peter Farrar, Alex is currently involved in interstate collaborations with pianist Marc Hannaford and the groups Quarantine and S.A.P. He has also had the opportunity to work with Australian jazz legends Bernie McGann, Judy Bailey and Scott Tinkler, and in April 2008 with American trumpeter and creative music veteran Wadada Leo Smith.
As a teacher, Alex focuses with most students on rock and groove drumming and co-ordination; hand technique (including rudiments and solos); reading; and jazz drumming. He also runs the Smiths Hill jazz combos and is Jazz Assistant at Wollongong Conservatorium of Music.
Through his interest in creating and maintaining opportunities for live music he has become involved with Jazzgroove, the NOW now, the Illawarra Improvised Music Association and Wollongong Conservatorium as well as starting two festivals - ConVerge (2006) and the Wollongong Youth Jazz Festival (2008). Alex is also the events co-ordinator for the Conservatorium and the Chair of the Australian Youth Music Council.
