What is ChiME?
ChiME is Wollongong Conservatorium of Music's Childhood Music Education program. Wollongong Conservatorium of Music was the first insitution in Australia to embrace the concept of early childhood music, consequently we are leaders in the field.
To encourage music for life! You can help develop your child's enjoyment and understanding of music.
Why should I enrol my child in the ChiME program?
When should I enrol my child?
Children can begin in the program from 12 months of age.
Where are classes held?
Gleniffer Brae, Murphys Avenue, Keiraville, Wollongong.
When are classes held?
Pre-school age children - Monday to Saturday mornings
School age children - Monday to Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings.
What is the cost per term?
Toddlers $87.50
Preparatory $112.50
Strand 1 $155.00
Transition $175.00
Are there any conditions for enrolment?
Yes, an adult must accompany a child to each lesson, as it is best for the child to have an adult's full attention. We therefore request that siblings do not attend.
Are there classes for children with special needs?
Yes, small classes are grouped according to age and ability and are taught by qualified music therapists. Individual tuition is also available.
How do I enrol my child(ren)?

What if my child is already nine or ten years of age?
Entry into a twelve-month ChiME program is available for children up to ten years of age.
What happens after my child finishes in the ChiME program?
Children can join a group or begin individual tuition. Children can commence in one of the beginner instrumental ensembles, Speech & Drama or Beginner Choir. Children can have an informal meeting with Conservatorium staff to discuss options and make recommendations as to instrument selection.
Toddlers
- 30-minute classes
- For children aged twelve months to 3 years
- Theme-based programs
- Children immersed in music through singing, dancing, listening to music & playing a variety of instruments
- Enrol at any time throughout the year
Preparatory
- 45-minute classes
- This is a six-month program for 3 year olds waiting to join Strand 1
- Introduces basic musical concepts in a theme-based programme with an emphasis on developing socialising, sharing, turn-taking and focus skills
Strand 1
- 1 hour classes
- Enrolment from 3½ to 7 years.
- Classes streamed into age appropriate groups
- Musical concepts explored through songs, games, poetry, sound exploration, notation, dance, art, using tuned & untuned percussion
- This strand can be one, two or three years, depending on the age of the child when they start
Transition
- 1 hour lessons
- Small classes of up to six students
- ChiME group learning leading to either individual tuition or ensemble playing
- Hands-on experience with over 15 musical instruments, voice and speech & drama
- Students must be least 7 years of age & have completed Strand 1
New Transition
- One hour lessons
- For children aged 9 or 10 years (year 3 or above at school) with no prior ChiME experience
- Combines aspects of Strand 1 and Transition in small classes of up to six students
- Twelve months duration
