Shannon Barnett is now recognised as not only one of the outstanding younger musicians in Australia, but also one of the country's finest jazz trombone players.  Her Melbourne-based quartet will kick of this year’s jazz series at Wollongong Conservatorium of Music.

She performs regularly with Melbourne ensembles including The Bamboos, the Bennetts Lane Big Band, Murphy’s Law, Vada and a trio with Allan Browne and Jex Saarelaht, and has performed with the Australian Art Orchestra, Barney McAll and Kurt Rosenwinkel, the Black Arm Band ‘Murundak’ and Andrea Keller. She is also an ‘honourary member’ of Wollongong-based group The Vampires, recording on each of their albums.  Her own quartet features some of her long-time collaborators and unique musicians in the Melbourne scene.

In 2008 Shannon was a special guest of Wollongong Conservatorium of Music to perform with the student group Pa-Paw and take part in the Wollongong Youth Jazz Festival.

Throughout January Shannon will be in Sydney to perform with Circus Oz, a recent interest outside her work in the jazz scene.  For the circus performances she has learnt to play the trombone while hanging upside down by one leg, although she is not expected to be doing any circus tricks for her performance on the 14th.  Director of Jazz at Wollongong Conservatorium says that “Shannon is such a great tombonist and musician, we jumped at the chance to bring her to Wollongong for her night off from the Circus.  It will be great show to start the year.”
