Wollongong Conservatorium of Music is presenting “rhythm Saturday” on July 24 to get rhythm section players grooving on some salsa, boogaloo and bossa nova rhythms. We are lucky to have Fabian Hevia, one of Australia’s leading percussionists, to work with the students and show them how a percussion section works.

Megaband Meets Mucho Mambo
Thursday 5 August 2010 @ University of Wollongong, University Hall
This year Megaband will get into a Latin groove with some Sambas, Salsa, and Boogaloos featuring special guests Mucho Mambo! Mucho Mambo is Sydney’s hottest Sals a Band, and they will make a first time ever appearance in this Wollongong Show. Members of the band will join the Mega Band for some choice Latin favourites by artists such as Mongo Santamaria, Tito Puente and Carlos Santana.The Megaband is a combined 100-piece band made up of instrumentalists ranging in age from 10-18 years old. The band started in 2007 with special guest James Morrison and continued in 2008 with another show with Morrison. In 2009 Funky American Trombonist Fred Wesley played some of his James Brown hits with the Mega Band.

The Term 2 Jazz Showcase will be held on Friday 25 June at the Conservatorium. Each term we hold a huge concert featuring all of our ensembles and professional groups. This time will be exceptional because some of the school bands run by the Conservatorium (Smiths Hill HS Middle Combo, Bulli HS and Keira HS) will join all Jazz Combos, Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble.

Each term the Con holds an Instrumental Saturday, where staff organise a day of workshops and performances for students with a focus on a particular instrument.
On Saturday 19 June 2010 we held a Guitar Saturday with special guest Raffaele Agostino.

Members of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra will perform with local students in a special free concert on Sunday 6 June.
14 members of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra will work with 60 students from the Illawarra for three days, culminating in a final performance. It is an incredible opportunity for local students to perform in a large orchestra with professional musicians, playing classic and contemporary repertiore.
