About Performance Day

Performance Day (previously known as "Performance Saturday" or "Saturday at the Con") is now held twice each term, in weeks 5 and 8.  It is simply a performance opportunity for Conservatorium students to perform their pieces in a semi-formal, friendly environment.  We provide an accompanist, a small supportive audience and morning tea, and the students provide the music!

Who can perform?

Any student at the Conservatorium can sign up to play a piece.  There is no minimum time but we ask that students play for up to 5-10 minutes, or longer if there is space on the program.

How does it work?

We start at 10am and there is no cost involved in any of these concerts

In 2011 we have introduced two small but important  changes to Performance Days. We will alternate between Saturdays (week 8) and Sundays (week 5) each term, to accommodate those that regularly aren't available on Saturday mornings.

If students require accompaniment they will need to let the Conservatorium know and provide the accompaniment sheet music two weeks prior to the concert.

Registration

You may register to play at Performance Day by filling in the online form or going to the Conservatorium office.

Accompaniment

We have a new system for the accompaniment at Performance Days.  The Conservatorium will provide our accompanist for the performance without charge, but students are asked to contribute towards the rehearsal costs.

If you need accompaniment, please, by the Monday 2 weeks prior to the performance you need to:

  • Register for Performance Day online or at the office
  • Take your accompaniment music to the office
  • Pay $10 for a 15 minute rehearsal (or multiples thereof - $20 for 30 minutes etc)
  • Register for a rehearsal time with the accompanist

Frequently Asked Questions

If I don't want to use the Con's accompanist do I still pay the $10?

No, the $10 is just to cover the rehearsal with the Accompanist.  The Conservatorium covers the accompanist's fee for the performance.

Who will the accompanist be?

It varies from concert to concert based on availability. We always ask Brad Baker, Head of Piano, first.

If I choose a different accompanist will the Con pay them?

No, for obvious reasons we can only pick one accompanist to be our allocated accompanist for each concert.  If a student asks a different accompanist it is entirely up to them to deal with payment.

I need to go at a particular time (eg. leave by 10:20, or arrive after 11am).  Is that ok?

We expect students to attend the whole concert, and in general do not schedule them for particular times. It's simply too difficult to accommodate people for particular times.  In general, we start at 10am and finish by 11:30am.

Can I play 2 or 3 pieces?

We ask students to play one piece.  For students playing very short pieces (eg. beginners playing a 32 bar song) it's generally ok to have more than one, but we can't have everyone performing 2 or 3 pieces.  The concert would go all day.  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
